The Lighthouse Academy

Concurrent enrollment means a student takes college courses while remaining a full-time middle school or high school student.  Students must take a minimum of 20 credits per semester in middle school or high school outside of their college classes to enroll in college coursework.  Students are limited to taking a maximum of 11 college credits every semester per community college district.  The Lighthouse Academy will take into consideration the student’s academic standing when approving concurrent enrollment. Honors designation in a high school English course requires students to complete all assigned reading (expository texts, poetry, short stories, books) and assignments/assessments with a 90 score or higher. Honors students also select additional readings from the different genre categories below. Honors English Paper For all high school English courses, an additional multi-page paper must be submitted to receive an Honors designation by the end of each semester.  While the final English papers are not graded, only outstanding quality using the below rubrics will receive the Honors designation. FORMAT 1.  Paper Header & Format: Full Name, Date, Book Title and Book Author must all be in the header of the paper, printed on every page in the upper left side. The entire paper must be single-space, use a legible 12-point font, and contain one-inch margins. 2. Title: Create an original title, uniquely relevant to this paper and book must be selected.  The original title should never contain only the book's title or author. There are ten Honors English options for high school paper topics at The Lighthouse Academy listed below. In each option, please include the book title, author, page total, and genre, as well as the date of the paper.  Please note that no option can be chosen more than once in an academic year. 1. Create a character list. Identify the protagonist, antagonist, and at least three other important characters. Write multiple paragraphs about each character describing the character’s personality and goals and how they fit into the conflict and purpose of the book.  Include at least one quote (or example with citation) from the book to support your paper's thesis for each character listed. 2. Setting: Write a paper describing the time and place in which the story occurs. Why is this particular time and place important to the conflict and purpose of the book?  How are other parts of the setting (social status, weather, season, historical period critical to the book?  Include...

All Honors classes in high school are weighted.  In order to receive Honors designation for high school courses, the student must complete each high school semester course with a minimum of a 85 points and the separate Honors assignment(s) must be completed for each high school semester course.  While the separate Honors assignment(s) are not graded, they must be found to be of Outstanding quality for the student to receive the Honors designation in that course. In order to receive Honors designation for college courses completed in high school, the course must meet the definition of an A-G requirement, be academic in nature, and be at a college-level.  For instance, physical education and remedial courses do not receive Honors credit. For the student to receive High Honors for the academic year, the student must finish the year with a 3.6  weighted Grade Point Average with at least 50 units (5 classes) in Honors classes.
