College Courses

Concurrent enrollment means a student takes college courses while remaining a full-time middle school or high school student.  Students must take a minimum of 20 credits per semester in middle school or high school outside of their college classes to enroll in college coursework.  Students are limited to taking a maximum of 11 college credits every semester per community college district.  The Lighthouse Academy will take into consideration the student’s academic standing when approving concurrent enrollment.

A-G Requirements

The Lighthouse Academy will help students determine how college course(s) will count towards high school graduation requirements.  Some examples:
  • History ("A" 20-Credit Requirement): History college courses must cover a comprehensive timeline to receive automatic Honors designation.  U.S. History courses must cover the Reconstruction to present day. World History courses must cover the 1800s to present day.
  • English ("B" 40-Credit Requirement): English college classes be English 1A or list English 1A (or a more advanced course) as a prerequisite to receive automatic Honors designation.
  • Mathematics ("C" 30-Credit Requirement): Mathematics college courses must be Calculus or list pre-calculus (or a more advanced course) as a prerequisite to receive automatic Honors designation.
  • Laboratory Science ("D" 20-Credit Requirement): Science college classes that do not contain a laboratory component (e.g., non-laboratory Astronomy or Engineering courses) may receive automatic Honors designation as a College Preparatory Elective ("G" Requirement) only.
  • Foreign Language ("E" 20-Credit Requirement): Foreign language college courses must include a separate laboratory component to receive automatic Honors designation.
  • Visual or Preforming Arts ("F" 10-Credit Requirement): Visual or performing arts college courses, such as dance, drama, music, or visual art, must include a classroom and laboratory component (minimum of 2 college semester units) to receive automatic Honors designation.
  • College Preparatory Elective ("G" 10-Credit Requirement): College courses that meet the A-G requirements but are beyond those used to satisfy the requirements above and all non-laboratory science college courses (e.g., Astronomy, Engineering) receive automatic Honors designation.
  • Physical education college courses or remedial college courses do not receive any Honors designation.
Credit Conversion

The Lighthouse Academy does not determine which college courses are transferrable the student's future university. The student’s future university will review the college transcript and determine any credit awarded.

The Lighthouse Academy applies the following college unit to high school credit conversion for all students concurrently enrolled in college courses:
College Semester UnitsHigh School Credits
1 unit2.5 credits
1.5-2.5 units5 credits
3 units or more10 credits

*If a student is awarded less than 1 semester unit at college, then The Lighthouse Academy will issue the same amount of credit in high school. For example, if a student completes 0.5 semester unit course at a college, then The Lighthouse Academy will award 0.5 credits on the high school transcript.

Please follow this conversion policy for all college courses.

Honors Designations

All Honors classes in high school are weighted.  In order to receive Honors designation for high school courses, the student must complete each high school semester course with a minimum of a 85 points and the separate Honors assignment(s) must be completed for each high school semester course.  While the separate Honors assignment(s) are not graded, they must be found to be of Outstanding quality for the student to receive the Honors designation in that course. In order to receive Honors designation for college courses completed in high school, the course must meet the definition of an A-G requirement, be academic in nature, and be at a college-level.  For instance, physical education and remedial courses do not receive Honors credit. For the student to receive High Honors for the academic year, the student must finish the year with a 3.6  weighted Grade Point Average with at least 50 units (5 classes) in Honors classes.
